HR Manager - JA Africa


The HR Manager will play a pivotal role in aligning HR strategies with JA Africa’s overall objectives. This position requires a blend of strategic thinking, leadership, and operational management to drive the organization’s talent management, employee relations, and compliance efforts.

The HR Manager will oversee the entire HR function, leading the team in delivering high-impact HR services that foster a positive workplace culture and enhance organizational performance.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: VP Operations


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, LLB, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  2. HR certifications such as CIPD, SHRM-CP, or HRCI are an advantage.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2 years in a managerial or leadership role.
  2. Prior experience working within the nonprofit sector or in resource-constrained and donor-funded organizations is highly desirable.
  3. Demonstrated experience in talent acquisition, employee engagement, performance management, employee wellness, and HR strategy.

COMPETENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to align HR initiatives with the long-term strategic goals of the organization.
  2. Capable of managing multiple HR projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines.
  3. Strong leadership skills to inspire and mentor a team of HR professionals.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  5. Empathy, diplomacy, and conflict resolution skills to foster positive employee relations.
  6. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to handle complex HR challenges.
  7. Experience working in an international, multicultural organization with knowledge of labor laws in several African countries.
  8. Fluency in English and French.
  9. Proficiency in HR Information Systems (HRIS) and a thorough understanding of HR technology trends.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HR Strategy Development and Implementation:

  1. Develop and implement HR strategies that support JA Africa’s mission, vision, and objectives.
  2. Align HR policies with organizational goals, ensuring a cohesive approach to talent management and growth.
  3. Monitor HR metrics and KPIs, providing regular reports to senior management for decision-making.
  4. Lead HR initiatives to support JA Africa’s efficiency, effectiveness, and the evolving needs of its staff.

Talent Acquisition and Recruitment:

  1. Oversee full-cycle recruitment processes, from job postings and interviews to onboarding new employees.
  2. Partner with department heads to identify workforce needs and ensure timely recruitment of high-caliber talent.
  3. Promote and build a diverse, inclusive workforce through fair and transparent hiring practices.
  4. Develop partnerships with universities, job platforms, and recruitment agencies to attract top talent to the NGO sector.

Performance Management and Development:

  1. Implement and manage performance appraisal systems to ensure high performance.
  2. Facilitate employee development plans, identifying training needs and organizing professional development opportunities.
  3. Collaborate with managers to provide coaching, feedback, and support to employees in achieving their career goals.
  4. Drive continuous improvement and professional growth through structured learning and development programs.

Employee Relations and Engagement:

  1. Foster a positive work environment, encouraging open communication, teamwork, and employee wellbeing.
  2. Act as a trusted advisor to employees and management, resolving workplace issues fairly and confidentially.
  3. Lead initiatives to improve employee engagement and organizational culture.
  4. Organize employee events, recognition programs, and wellness activities to boost morale.

Compensation and Benefits Management:

  1. Ensure competitive, fair, and equitable compensation structures within budgetary constraints.
  2. Manage employee benefits, such as health insurance, leave policies, and pension plans.
  3. Regularly review compensation and benefits policies to maintain alignment with market standards and legal requirements.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  1. Ensure compliance with local labor laws and NGO-specific regulations.
  2. Lead internal audits of HR functions to ensure best practices in hiring, training, and record-keeping.
  3. Develop and update HR policies and procedures to reflect legal changes and organizational growth.
  4. Manage employee safety, welfare, and health policies, ensuring a safe work environment.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):

  1. Champion DEI initiatives, creating programs and policies that promote equity and inclusion across the organization.
  2. Provide training on unconscious bias, diversity, and cultural sensitivity.
  3. Ensure hiring, promotion, and development practices reflect the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

HR Information Systems (HRIS) and Data Management:

  1. Manage HR information systems to streamline HR processes, maintain accurate employee records, and ensure confidentiality.
  2. Leverage data to inform HR strategy, tracking key metrics such as turnover rates, retention, and employee satisfaction.

Collaboration and Cross-Departmental Leadership:

  1. Work closely with department heads to align HR initiatives with organizational needs.
  2. Participate in strategic planning processes to ensure HR functions are fully integrated into the NGO’s operational plans.
  3. Collaborate with external partners, such as donors or stakeholders, on HR-related matters as needed.
